A British technological marvel, destroyed by government order. The story tells of the BAC TSR-2 bomber, which was destined to be the greatest achievement of British aviation, but was destroyed for political reasons. On October 7, 1959, a Soviet S-75 missile shot down a British English Electric Canberra over Taiwan, forcing Britain to seek a revolutionary solution. Development of the TSR-2 began as a response to the threat of Soviet anti-aircraft systems. The aircraft was intended to fly at Mach 2 at high altitude and at the speed of sound when low-level. However, political intrigue, infighting between the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force, the rising cost of the project, and pressure from the United States led to the program's cancellation on April 1, 1965. Of the nine airframes built, only two museum examples survive.
