Landing on Mars — Why You Steer a Falling Spacecraft Blind, With a Single Knob

You are falling toward Mars at thousands of meters per second, and the only thing you can actually change is which way you roll. Not the engines, not the brakes — just the roll of a falling shell, with several ways for the fall to beat you crowding in at once. This is the story of how engineers wrung a precise, survivable arrival out of a single knob and a wisp of atmosphere. Mars is the cruel middle: an atmosphere just thick enough to heat a spacecraft white-hot and shove it off course, but nowhere near thick enough to stop it — so a lander must do the hardest version of a Moon landing and an Earth return at once, blind, with radio blacked out and no time to ask Earth what to do. We follow the one real control the vehicle has (bank angle), the number set before launch that quietly decides the fate of the parachute (the ballistic coefficient), the porpoising fall, the guidance that learns the air on the way down, the same trick used to brake into orbit (aerocapture) — and the bitter twist that the very steering jets that aim the vehicle can burn through its heat shield or cancel their own authority. The discovery that sets up this engineering story: why 5 millibars is a wall. • The Hardest Part Is the Way Back — Mars Sample Return and the long chain of getting home. Based on NASA NTRS technical documents. This is the story of a problem a generation of engineers wrestled with on paper and in wind tunnels — much of it for crewed Mars expeditions drawn in detail that never flew — not a report on any single landing.
