This is the story of how engineers wrung a precise, survivable arrival out of a single knob and a wisp of atmosphere. Mars is the cruel middle: an atmosphere just thick enough to heat a spacecraft white-hot and shove it off course, but nowhere near thick enough to stop it — so a lander must do the hardest version of a Moon landing and an Earth return at once, blind, with radio blacked out and no time to ask Earth what to do.
