In the heart of the Cinco Villas region, near Sádaba, stand the ruins of a place marked by time… and tragedy. The Monastery of Santa María de Cambrón was founded in the 13th century under the patronage of Peter II of Aragon, and for centuries it housed a community of Cistercian nuns who lived a life of silence, prayer, and work. But everything changed. In the 16th century, an epidemic devastated the monastery: 25 nuns died, and only 4 survived. From that moment on, this place was never the same. After its abandonment, and with the Mendizábal confiscation of church property in the 19th century, the monastery passed into private hands and was repurposed as a farm. Its walls were altered, its spaces transformed… and part of its history vanished. Today, only ruins remain. But there are also traces: putlog holes in the stone, added structures, and an empty niche in the apse that recalls the disappearance of the Annunciation scene.
