How One Pair Of Bald Eagles Beat The Odds | Documentary | Captiva Island, Florida
November 23, 2025 If you appreciate an inspiring underdog story about wildlife survival, you need not look further than the nesting bald eagles who call Captiva Island, Florida, their home. Resident nesting pair, Connie and Clive, exemplify the tenacity, resilience and strength attributed to our beloved U.S. National Bird. The history of this remarkable small island nest is nothing short of astounding. Resident bald eagle, Connie, estimated to be at least 22 years old, is truly the driving force behind the success of this nest and its offspring since 2007. Connie has had 3 mates, survived 2 hurricanes, hatched 14 eggs, raised and fledged 6 eaglets, and had 1 eaglet, Connick, fall from the nest tree in an attempt to fledge to later be rescued and rehabilitated. This video details the history of this nest, the devastation of Hurricane Ian in 2022 and the consequential negative environmental impacts the hurricane left behind that directly affected the Captiva Island bald eagles and other wildlife and how Connie and Clive fought to survive and continue to thrive today. The success of this nest, however, relies upon the continued community based advocacy, interest and vital intervention by conservationists and monitors, to assist in sustaining and improving the bald eagle quality of life, safety and habitat. The nest is on private property owned by wildlife enthusiast, Lori Covert. Window To Wildlife installed live stream cameras in 2018 for Lori. The Clinic For The Rehabilitation Of Wildlife (CROW) is the primary partner in any nest inspections, maintenance, and medical treatments and interventions. Along with the Audubon Center For Birds Of Prey, Audubon Florida Eagle watch, and the U.S. and Florida Fish and Wildlife Services, the careful monitoring and information gathered assists in continued bald eagle protection efforts. Anti-Coagulant Rodenticide or rat poison, for example, was linked to eaglet Connick's fall from the nest tree. The local organizations rallied behind a task force to successfully eradicate the harmful use of AR on the island. Connick was successfully rehabilitated, but deemed non-releasable. Connick has a new role as an educational ambassador at The Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C. Connick is doing well and was featured last year on National Bald Eagle Day in our Nation’s capital. Window To Wildlife's 3 streaming cameras allow not only educational viewing for interested bird watchers, but they are pivotal in gathering important data related to the needs, health, and well-being of the bald eagles. This short documentary video I hope shows the extraordinary story of the Captiva Island Bald Eagles and how they are supported, loved and cared for, by their community. After Hurricane Ian destroyed the Captiva Island structure and landscapes, CROW, along with Window To Wildlife, rebuilt their original nest hoping they would return. And Connie and Clive did return and continue to raise their young in their original nest to this day. Currently, Connie has laid two eggs this nesting season, one of November 16th and one on November 19th. We look forward to what this new season will bring. A very special thanks to Connor O'Brien, co-founder of Window To Wildlife, for giving me permission to create this work.
