Opera Baltimore presents "Silenced Songs: Rediscovering the Lost Music of Jewish Composers"

Opera Baltimore | Voices in Solidarity Silenced Songs: Rediscovering the Lost Music of Jewish Composers Sara Duchovnay, soprano Eileen Cornett, piano Recorded March 29, 2026, at The Engineers Club at the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion in Baltimore. Curated and extensively researched by soprano Sara Duchovnay, Silenced Songs honors Jewish composers whose lives and careers were disrupted, displaced, or silenced by the Third Reich and the Holocaust. Through art song, opera, cabaret, and popular music, this recital restores repertoire that belongs within the canon of Western classical music. The program includes works by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Kurt Weill, Josephine von Winter, Lena Stein-Schneider, Camilla Frydan, and Hilde Löwe-Flatter. These composers reflect a wide range of Jewish experiences during the first half of the twentieth century, including exile, internment, survival, reinvention, and loss. Their music bears witness to history while affirming the endurance of the artistic voice. This recital was presented as part of Voices in Solidarity: Baltimore’s Black and Jewish Operatic History, Opera Baltimore’s place-based initiative exploring the intertwined histories of Baltimore’s Black and Jewish communities through music, scholarship, conversation, and education.
