Kiss the Maid Behind the Barrel/Trim the Velvet | The Phonograph Project

  / phonographproject​   This month, we tackled a favorite set of Chicago/New York piper Tom Ennis, who recorded this pair of reels no less than four times over the course of the 1920s! Ennis had a device where he essentially turned the famous reels 'Kiss the Maid Behind the Barrel' and 'Trim the Velvet' into one giant eight-part reel by playing the first tune straight into the second, then starting over again with the first. It's a bit of a brain teaser at first, but musically effective once you've wrapped your head around it. Ennis made an excellent solo recording of the set in 1921 before going on to record it again in great style alongside fiddler James Morrison in 1923.
