Wat was de Guldensporenslag? | 11 juli 1302 | #Steden en burgers | Historische Context VWO

On July 11, 1302, the Battle of the Golden Spurs took place in Kortrijk, Belgium. Knights from the army of the French King Philip IV faced off against soldiers from Flanders. The French army, considered much stronger on paper, proved unable to defeat the Flemish pikemen and archers. In fact, the French retreated. The Battle of the Golden Spurs was an important event for nationalism among the Flemish bourgeoisie in the late Middle Ages. The day after the battle, the gilded spurs of the slain French soldiers were collected by the Flemish. The battle takes its name from this. July 11 is still a national holiday in Flanders. The Battle of the Golden Spurs fits well with curriculum on the late Middle Ages and the historical context of "Cities and Citizens in the Low Countries 1050-1700" for pre-university education (VWO).
