The 17(ish) Vowels of Shakespeare's London
In this video - a follow-up from a recent one - I try to create a 'vowel count' of at least one of the accents in circulation in London around the time that Shakespeare lived. I refer again to the writings of Robert Robinson, who tried to devise his own phonetic alphabet to describe his pronunciation without the constraints of the English spelling system, which by the 1610s had already drifted quite far away from being phonetically transparent.
