Some rambling: A jian handguard design that I don't understand.

Pretty much what the title says. There is a fairly recent Chinese jian handguard design (and by recently I mean early late 1800s -1900s) that I just don't get. There are other somewhat strange weapon designs that I can more or less understand, but this particular one has always perplexed me. You'll see what I mean in the video. By the way, I royally mess up when I mention General Li Jing Lin's name. I said Li Ling Lin. Ooops.... But yeah, it's supposed to be Li Jing Lin.
