Here’s how the Dodge Caliber almost became a rebadged Mitsubishi Lancer
Check out my new website for buying and selling old cars, the My Old Car Exchange! Go to https://myoldcar.loma.tech/ and sign up today! In this episode I provide the history of the Dodge Caliber, a compact hatchback intended to replace the Dodge/Plymouth/Chrysler Neon. Based on a platform originally designed by former partner Mitsubishi, the Caliber's ad campaign at its launch in 2006 was focused on showing the Caliber as being tough, not cute like the Neon was. Sales of the Caliber started decently but never came close to the sales the Neon started with in 1996. In 2007 an SRT-4 model was offered, but it sold poorly, only lasting through 2009. By 2009, with Chrysler's bankruptcy looming, sales kept dropping, even when the Caliber was included in the Cash For Clunkers campaign. The Caliber's last year was 2012, being replaced by the Dart the following year.
