5 Trains, 4 Towns, 1 Epic Day Out | Tyne Valley Railway

Five trains. Three cities. One brilliant journey to explore Hexham and Haydon Bridge on the Tyne Valley Railway. We’ll start at Edinburgh Waverley, jump on a LUMO train down the East Coast to Newcastle, then switch to the Tyne Valley Line – also called the Hadrian's Wall Line – for a slow, scenic wander through stations and towns packed with character. First stop, Hexham: a quick step into the past at Hexham Old Gaol (1330!) before the calm beauty of Hexham Abbey. Next, Haydon Bridge: a stroll by the River Tyne, and a classic pint at the Railway Hotel that costs less than you’d think. There’s even a quirky family twist on Ratcliffe Road that I didn’t see coming. We finish in Carlisle and aim for home… but the day still has one surprise up its sleeve.
