The $3 Additive That DOUBLES Any Engine's Life - Why Dealers Want It Gone
Gene here. If your older engine has picked up a light tapping in the first few seconds after a cold start, do not brush it off. That sound is often the first warning that the anti-wear protection in modern oil is no longer enough for the engine you are running, and it can end in a camshaft bill north of two thousand dollars. In this one I explain the job your oil quietly does at the camshaft, where a flat steel lifter slides on a steel lobe under enormous pressure, and how a single additive lays down a sacrificial film that gets worn away and rebuilt thousands of times a minute. Then I show you why that additive, zinc, also called ZDDP, was steadily reduced in everyday oil starting in the 1990s to protect catalytic converters, and how that left older flat tappet engines unprotected. The fix is a roughly three dollar dose of zinc additive at every oil change, set against a $1,900 to $2,500 camshaft job. Just as important, I draw the hard line: this is for older, rebuilt, and high performance flat tappet engines, not modern roller cam engines, where extra zinc does nothing and can harm the converter. #zddp #classiccars #enginerepair #carmaintenance #savemoney Got an old engine you swear by? Tell me what it is in the comments so the rest of us can learn from it. Disclaimer: This video is for general informational purposes only. Always follow the additive manufacturer's dosing instructions and your engine maker's oil specification. If you are unsure what your engine needs, have a qualified mechanic advise you before adding anything to your oil.
