A walking tour of Deep Ellum Historic District, Dallas, Texas

Deep Ellum is an area for art, entertainment and culture, located just east of downtown Dallas. The area has a lot of history, beginning as one of the largest african-american communities in the south in the 1800's. There was a strong blues scene at one point with Robert Johnson, Lead Belly, and Bessie Smith making the rounds there. It got more gentrified in the 1990's with apartment complexes, and today you can find those apartments alongside live music venues, art, tattoo places, tattoo removal places, coffee shops, taco places, diners, ramen restaurants, brunch restaurants, clubs, barbers, clothes stores and ice cream places. Live music venues include Sons of Hermann Hall, All Good Cafe, Elm Street Saloon, Trees, Three Links, Punch Bowl Social, Pecan Lodge, Will Call, Adair's Saloon, Deep Ellum Art Company, and Double Wide Bar. Before Deep Ellum I played a gig at Shady's Burgers and Brewhaha in the Lake Highlands area. Good times.
