Shelham Australian Army Clasp Knife
The Shelham clasp knife is a nice bit of local history. Shelham is a brand name created by Sheldon and Hammond, a major import company that sourced knives made overseas, primarily in Japan, for the Australian market. Since the 1980s, they’ve supplied the Australian Defence Force (ADF) with a 3-blade stainless steel clasp knife modelled after the UK-made version, first issued in 1952 at the start of the cold war. Interestingly, the Shelham knife seems to come in two variations: one for the civilian market and one issued to the military, complete with government markings on the side One of the features of this knife is its combination of a sheepsfoot blade and a marlin spike. It’s both distinctive and highly functional bit of equipment, especially when dealing with ropes and lines. This knife has the NATO stock number: 5110-66-013. Clasp knives have a long history in Australia, dating back to World War I, when they were essential tools for soldiers in the trenches.
