Atlas of Finance: where does the money come from and where is it going? with Dariusz Wójcik

Science & Cocktails is proud to welcome Dariusz Wójcik, Professor of Financial Geography at the National University of Singapore and Honorary Research Associate at the University of Oxford, and author of the internationally acclaimed bestseller Atlas of Finance, who will tell you all about where money comes from and where it goes. Where does finance come from? What does finance have to do with astronomy and space? What is the best investment in history? How wrong can financial markets be? How will technology change finance? Money penetrates every nook and cranny of the world and our everyday lives, and yet it had never been mapped before. In this episode, Prof. Dariusz Wójcik will use maps and visuals from the first ever atlas of finance to show that the history of maps and finance have always been connected and to address fundamental questions about finance. He will demonstrate how the economy, cities and globalization have been enabled by finance and will explain the intersections of finance with faraway topics like astronomy and space. He will draw lessons from the best available data on the history of investments and their possible future. He will also share warnings about fundamental errors that can be made by financial markets and will argue that new instruments and technologies, including cryptos and AI, can transform finance, but not in the ways most people expect. Dariusz Wójcik is Professor of Financial Geography at National University of Singapore and Honorary Research Associate at University of Oxford. Author of eight books and over one hundred articles, including internationally acclaimed bestseller Atlas of Finance. Founder and inaugural chair of the Global Network on Financial Geography, and Editor-in-Chief of Finance & Space journal. Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, and winner of the Royal Geographical Society 2025 Murchison Award for best research in geography.
