The sky is a heavy grey, pressing low over Hyde Park, and the trees stand bare, their skeletal branches etched stark against the pale light. The path is slick from recent rain, puddles reflecting the dim glow of streetlamps not yet awake. A few distant figures move through the misty afternoon—solitary walkers, bundled in scarves, the occasional jogger passing with a rhythmic crunch of gravel. The Serpentine is still, a dull sheen of silver under the muted sky, disturbed only by the slow drift of waterfowl. The wind stirs now and then, not sharp, but carrying a quiet weight, as if reluctant to let winter go. Moving toward Paddington, the park fades into the hum of the city. The distant wail of a siren, the muffled rush of traffic, the metallic groan of a train somewhere unseen. There’s a strange comfort in the transition, in the quiet solitude of the park giving way to the pulse of London. The afternoon is moody, expectant, as though holding its breath before the first hints of spring finally break through.
