"Locked" in a canal for 50 hours straight
Locks, Swans & Towpath Mayhem What do you get when you mix a paddleboard, 25 canal locks, a dope AF wild camping setup and a deep need to escape modern life for a bit? Apparently… this. This is my 50-hour journey SUPing down the Grand Union Canal, from the calm edges of Leighton Buzzard all the way to the historic (and slightly underwhelming) Berkhamsted Castle. It’s a voyage through some of England’s most overlooked waterways—winding between industrial estates, serene countryside, dodgy underpasses, dogging and a fair few places I probably wasn’t technically allowed to sleep. Unlike my usual river adventures where the current does half the work, this canal trip came with its own unique joys: no tides, no weirs, and very little current. Sounds ideal, right? That is, until you realise that every lock on the canal means hauling your gear out of the water, marching it along the towpath like a stubborn pack mule, and flopping back in with the grace of a wet otter. I counted over 25 portages. My shoulders counted more. Along the way I: Lost a camera to the murky depths (RIP little guy—you filmed bravely) Had to animate part of the trip Wild camped next to a dog poo Got into a low-key territorial dispute with a swan that definitely lifts weights, seriously, this swan wanted blood from me. Swam in grotty canal water that may or may not given me life threatening tonsillitis a week later Met a few characters, dodged some rain, and made it to the end with my board, my limbs, and most of my dignity intact There were real moments of calm: misty mornings with kingfishers darting past, silent stretches of water that looked untouched for decades, and the kind of solitude that’s hard to find unless you’re really looking for it. Why paddleboard the Grand Union Canal? Because sometimes you need to do something weird, physically demanding, slightly dangerous, and completely pointless… just to remind yourself you're alive. Also, train tickets were expensive and this was technically a "budget" holiday. Big shoutout to: The random towpath cyclists who gave encouraging nods, the narrowboat owners who didn’t run me over, and the kid in Tring who asked if I was “training for the army or something.” Kind of, mate. Kind of. https://www.instagram.com/fractisdnb?... music at 18.00 "the guide" --- Want more offbeat British adventures?
