Les Cases Cerdà de l'Eixample | betevé

The first multi-family homes in the Eixample were built at Carrer del Consell de Cent, number 340. Santiago Gasull, architect from the Garcia i Gasull Arquitectes firm, explains to Va pasa aquí that the merchant Josep Cerdà bought a plot of land to build four buildings on. At the time, Gasull points out, “the people of Barcelona who lived within the walls had no interest in leaving them”. For this reason, Josep Cerdà built these facades “so colorful with the murals”, so that they would look like “Italian palaces” and make them more attractive. The Italian paintings Gasull points out that Josep Cerdà’s idea “was not a very productive adventure because it went to ruin”, but, on the other hand, “he left this treasure”. The work was commissioned from Antoni Valls i Galí and two painters from the Venetian school, Battistuzzi and Pascutti, who were in Barcelona doing set design work at the Liceu. Gasull emphasizes that the “paintings had a short life because they degraded quite quickly.” His architectural firm was in charge of the restoration: “Every time we cleaned, we discovered new paintings.” Restorer Elena Moral participated in this recovery work and explains that they realized that under the remains of a later restoration were the original paintings. From that moment on, they changed the direction of the project and “tried to recover the original decorations and paintings.” Elena Moral emphasizes that they used a “very good” silicate mural paint that allowed them to achieve “this whole range of colors, intensity and brightness” and that currently “remains accurate.” Subscribe to betevé's Youtube channel:    / betevé   Follow betevé on: Instagram:   / betevecat   TikTok:   / btvnoticies   X:   / beteve   Facebook:   / betevecat   Web: https://www.beteve.cat
