These two majors start off very similar in college but then become very different. Civil engineers branch off into their subfields including structural engineering, geotechnical, water resources, and transportation. Mechanical engineers focus more on heat transfer, fluid mechanics, dynamic systems, etc. Mechanical engineering does lead to a wider range of job opportunities compared to civil engineering. However, both these majors have high employment and salaries so you can't go wrong with either one. Both of these majors involve a large amount of math and physics which you should have an interest in before entering either major.
