The history of Narwar Fort is very rich and old. This fort is situated on a high hill, east of the Kali Sindh River in Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh. It is considered to be one of the most ancient and safe forts in India. The most important aspect of Narwar Fort is its story related to the Mahabharata period. It is believed that this fort was the capital of King Nala of Mahabharata. The immortal love story of King Nala and Princess Damyanti of Vidarbha is associated with this fort. The fort is named after Raja Nal, which was earlier known as Nalpur. This fort was originally the capital of the Naga kings and nine Naga kings ruled here. Later, in the 10th century, the Kachwaha Rajputs took over the area and rebuilt the fort. From the 12th century, the fort was ruled by the Kachwaha, Pratihara and Tomar rulers. After this, the fort also remained under the Mughals, who built some structures here, such as mosques and tombs. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the fort came under the control of the Maratha Scindia rulers. The grandeur and strength of the Narwar fort can be gauged from the fact that it is considered the most important fort in Bundelkhand and the second largest fort in Central India after the Gwalior fort.
