Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4012 survived the scrapper because of a clerical error — a paperwork mistake in the disposal process that delayed its condemnation long enough for a preservation group to intervene before the cutting torch arrived. The locomotive that should have been scrapped alongside its classmates in the late 1950s and early 1960s instead ended up donated to a museum, where it sat for decades as a static display before restoration conversations began.
