Addiction: Current Science, Current Doctrine Addiction and Drug Treatment Presenter: Dr. Wilson Compton, M.D., M.P.E., Deputy Director, National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services Description and Learning Objectives: This session will provide an introduction to the neuroscience of addiction, with an emphasis on how neuroscience and developmental sciences inform responses to the current public health opioid crisis. Specifically, the lecture will provide: • Introduction to the neuroscience of addiction and drug abuse, including why individuals become addicted, and how addiction affects the brain and behavior. • Introduction to current knowledge base on the prevention and treatment of addiction and drug abuse • Brief review of the current opioid crisis and medical and policy responses.
