Samsung's record earnings and Korea's mega projects: Where is the market headed?
삼성전자 역대급 실적•메가 프로젝트… 한국 증시 어디로 가나 Welcome to Within The Frame, where we bring the most pressing issues across the globe into focus. I'm Kim Mok-yeon. Samsung Electronics has kicked off Korea's earnings season on a strong note, posting another record-breaking quarter and beating market expectations as AI-driven demand continues to reshape the semiconductor industry. At the same time, the Korean government has unveiled its ambitious three mega projects focused on semiconductors, physical AI and AI data centers, signaling a major push for future growth. So, what do these developments mean for the Korean economy and the stock market? And with global uncertainties and foreign selling still in the picture, can this rally continue? To help us break it all down, we're joined by Professor Yang Jun-sok from The Catholic University of Korea. Welcome. Also joining us is Hwagyun Kim, Professor of Banking and Finance at Texas A&M University, Mays Business School. Good to see you again. 1. (KIM) Samsung Electronics has reported another record-breaking quarter, beating market expectations. What stands out to you most about today's results and the market's reaction? 2. (YANG) Building on that, do these results suggest Korea's semiconductor supercycle still has room to run? And what could that mean for the broader economy? 3. (KIM) Looking a little deeper, some analysts say operating profit would have topped 100 trillion won without one-off bonus provisions. Does that give you more confidence that this rally is backed by strong fundamentals? 4. (KIM) Even so, foreign investors have remained net sellers. Do today's earnings change that picture, or are bigger concerns still keeping overseas investors on the sidelines? 5. (YANG) Turning to government policy, how much could the government's three mega projects boost Korea's long-term growth? 6. (KIM) From an investor's perspective, could those projects create opportunities beyond semiconductor giants like Samsung Electronics and SK hynix? 7. (YANG) Looking further ahead, what will it take for these projects to translate into stronger growth and more jobs? 8. (YANG) At the same time, investors are also watching the FOMC minutes and key U.S. and Chinese economic data. Which external risks could have the biggest impact on Korean stocks? 9. (KIM) With those risks in mind, where do you see the biggest investment opportunities in the months ahead? That's where we'll leave our discussion tonight, Prof.YANG and Prof.KIM, thank you so much for your insights.
