The good rapport that the Government and the Church displayed just a few weeks ago during Pope Leo XIV's visit to Spain has broken down following statements by the president of the Episcopal Conference, Luis Argüello. In a summer course, he asserted that "when a State forgets ethics, it becomes a gang of thieves." The Minister of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños, responded by letter, calling this reasoning "unfair" and asking what would happen if a member of the Government were to define the entire Church as a "gang of sexual abusers," alluding to the abuse cases. In the same letter, Bolaños asks that the relationship between the two institutions be based on "moderation, respect, and justice," and not on "exaggeration and partisanship." Furthermore, Argüello fueled the controversy by linking immigrant integration to absenteeism, stating that if the sick leave lists were reviewed, "there would be some surprises."
