Smartphones increased awareness, creativity, and opportunities in education and business, but also brought challenges such as distraction, social media addiction, reduced face-to-face interaction, and a growing desire for instant success and entertainment. Overall, the youth mindset shifted from locally focused thinking to a more technology-driven and globally influenced lifestyle. Some major negative aspects seen among many young people in Sri Lanka after the spread of smartphones include: Increased social media addiction and waste of time Shortened attention span and reduced reading habits Decline in face-to-face communication and family interaction Exposure to harmful content, misinformation, and unhealthy trends Mental stress, anxiety, loneliness, and comparison culture Reduced physical activity and unhealthy sleep patterns Growing dependency on instant entertainment and quick success Weakening focus on studies, discipline, and long-term goals in some youths Cyberbullying and online harassment Loss of privacy and overexposure of personal life online At the same time, smartphones also brought many positive opportunities in learning, communication, business, and creativity.
