On January 18, 2024, the Theatre Institute hosted the inaugural lecture in the series "Wyspiański: Theatre of Presence," titled "I Am Aware of Their Play." An introduction to the theatre of presence. The lecture was led by Dr. Hab. Prof. Dorota Jarząbek-Wasyl of the Jagiellonian University. An introduction to the theatre of presence Wyspiański's historic premieres at the turn of the 20th century undoubtedly followed the established model of theatre operation, rehearsal, set design, and costume design. Wyspiański found his way within this mode, but he also brought his own methods, specific behaviors, and ways of communicating—interestingly, often beyond words. The first lecture will explore the artist's backstage activities and their scope, as well as review available documents and traces of his work, with particular emphasis on drawings and situational sketches as materialized traces of the staged energy and the vibrant current of creation, the search for solutions, thinking, and theatrical experimentation. A timeline of performances and their external context (repertoire selection, contemporary city life, social events related to the premieres) will also be outlined. She researches the history of theatre and drama in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly the process of theatrical creation, theatre customs, the art of acting, and the description and editing of sources for theatre history. In addition to several dozen scholarly articles, she has published the books: "Word and Voice. The Problem of Conversation in Drama in Theoretical and Historical Approaches" (2006), "Behind the Scenes. The Birth of Performance in 19th-Century Polish Theatre" (2016), "The 19th-Century Theatre Archive. People, Documents, Histories" (with Barbara Maresz, 2019), and most recently, among others. a chapter devoted to Wyspiański in the collective work "Changing the Setting. Polish Theatrical and Social Scenography of the 20th and 21st Centuries", ed. D. Buchwald, D. Kosiński, Warsaw 2020) and the script of the world premiere of the drama "Protesilas and Laodamia" by Stanisław Wyspiański (2022).
