Lully/D’Anglebert - Passacaille d’Armide

From « Pièces de Clavecin, Transcriptions de Monsieur de Lully » (1689) This famous passacaille is the last dance on Lully’s greatest opera, Armide. It was such a success on the time that Jean-Henry d’Anglebert, harpsichordist of the king, made this solo arrangement of it. “Opulence” may be the best word to describe it, since it’s definitely one of the most ornamented pieces of the repertoire. The complex technical demands and refined musicianship makes this passacaille a true masterpiece. This humble homemade recording was one of several “moments musicaux” during the pandemic. I hope you enjoy it and stay safe! “Pentagonal” virginal by José Olmiro Borges after DePerticis, 1684.
