I tried to compile everything we know about them into one video, so I hope I didn't miss anything. I'm looking forward to your likes and subscriptions if you found this interesting. Let's start with the Ball Mine, which looks like an advanced soccer ball. Before attacking, it must charge, after which it releases the accumulated charge at the enemy. Unlike other Alliance devices, they are destroyed upon contact with water and fire. It has a unique variant, the discharged Ball Mine, which is a dog's ball. It can distract enemies and even kill them, but it can't be carried too far due to invisible barriers designed by the developers. The Ball Mine has many predecessors that never made it to release. For example, the Ball Turret, which would roll in search of enemies, then open up and fire. RollerBuddy is the first version of a friendly Ball Mine. The main difference was that it could identify and attack the most important and dangerous enemies in a group, and was controlled with a special wand. The previous design of the Ball Mine was more reminiscent of a naval mine. Manhacks The Combine call it the Viscerator, while the rebels simply call it "HAAAAKS/ Anti-personnel devices that are quite clumsy, as if they crash into a wall, they lose their balance. They are used primarily in the canals, which is why most refugees have distinctive cuts, apparently caused by manhacks. They can be part of the Civil Defense equipment, or they can be connected to a dispenser, as shown at the outpost, where one Goshnik activates manhacks via the console. A manhack can be grabbed by the gravity gun, in which case it can be used as a chainsaw. Allies will stop shooting at it, but enemies will, conversely, try to destroy it first. In the early stages of Half-Life 2's development, the player could reprogram manhacks to their advantage. This concept carried over into Episode I, where Alyx can reprogram ball mines. Later, this mechanic was supposed to be added to Half-Life Alyx, but apparently it didn't work out. Earlier, the developers conceived a game called Manhack Arcade. In it, citizens played as a manhack and killed refugees. But they had no idea it wasn't a game, and they were actually controlling a real manhack and killing real people. This implied that all the manhacks encountered in the game could be controlled by citizens who didn't know anything about it. Here are early textures and concepts for the manhacks. Combination Turret. Tripod-mounted pulse machine guns used to hold back the enemy. Based on the human military turrets used in Half-Life 1. They are invulnerable to all damage, but are disabled if dropped. In Episode II, they can explode. The Half-Life 2 Prima Guide states that a defect in the tripod's unstable base, causing it to fall over easily, was only discovered after mass production. Friendly turrets are slightly different. When dropped, they make a sound and flash to help the player locate and recover them. They also automatically level out when picked up. Here's an early concept for a turret. It's used in Valve's Alien Swarm. Unlike Heku's turrets, Combine turrets are activated by visual contact rather than lasers. However, the next type, ceiling turrets, do use lasers. They are more powerful and accurate, and have 1000 health.
