I tried an Art Form that took over Japan in 2010 | KINTSUGI on Wood — 鉋 | 失敗寸前だった修復

Welcome to a new Wabi-Sabi Story! I found this old Japanese hand planer (Kanna) for just a few dollars, but I saw its potential. My goal was to transform it into an invaluable part of my workshop. The challenge was immense: the wooden body had a massive split, and the blade was badly worn. But during the process, I rushed things and made a critical mistake—I accidentally fractured the precious steel blade. In that moment, I thought this nearly 100-year-old tool was lost forever. This is more than a tool restoration; it’s a story about failure, recovery, and finding beauty in imperfection. My Philosophy: Finding beauty in imperfection through Wabi-Sabi remains at the core of my work. It’s a sustainable way to give tools a new life, cherishing the precious materials and honoring the effort of the original Japanese masters. The Project: Join me on this journey as we repair the split oak body (Dai) with a Kintsugi-inspired dovetail inlay using rare Tasmanian Huon Pine, and then see if we can save the blade from the disaster I created.
