Prince Adam, heir to the throne, spent most of his days avoiding the rigorous training expected of a future king. Instead of drilling with a wooden practice sword, he preferred to wander the palace gardens with Cringer, a striped tiger who could speak and loved to chase after floating leaves. Their carefree games were interrupted whenever Queen Marlena, Adam’s mother, called him to the training yard. “A prince cannot rule by whim,” she would remind him, her voice a mixture of affection and authority.
