Walther/Vivaldi: Concerto in B Minor | Organ Reimagining
Johann Gottfried Walther's Concerto in B Minor has a remarkable story. For many years the work circulated under the title Concerto del Sigr. Meck, and only later was it recognized as an organ transcription of Antonio Vivaldi's Violin Concerto in E Minor, RV 275. In a sense, the music itself experienced a journey of transformation: changing instruments, crossing generations, losing its identity, and eventually finding it again. The concerto belongs to the rich tradition of Baroque transcription, when composers such as Walther and his younger cousin J. S. Bach adapted Italian concertos for the organ. These works did far more than simply transfer notes from one instrument to another. They reimagined orchestral music through the organ's unique combination of architecture, resonance, and color. For this recording I chose the Hradetzky organ, sampled by Evensong, and placed it within a larger virtual church acoustic in Mannheim. The resulting sound world allows the concerto to unfold not as a violin work imitated by an organ, but as a new musical conversation between instrument, room, and repertoire. One aspect that particularly struck me while preparing the piece is the balance of its architecture. The three movements emerge with nearly equal weight and presence, creating a satisfying formal symmetry across the entire work. That sense of proportion is reflected visually in the accompanying artwork and animation, where geometric forms continuously deconstruct and reconstruct themselves—a modern reflection of the same ideas of transformation, structure, and renewal found within the music itself. This performance is part of the Resonances Reimagined series: familiar music transformed through the voice of the organ.
