RENO ROCKET IN THE #17 RITCHEY CAR Located on Huckleberry Ridge Road in Knox, Pa lies the grounds of the Sportsman’s Speedway. In 1973, former driver Sam Colwell and his wife Bonnie, built the 1/3-mile semi-banked clay oval and opened it for racing. V-8 Modified Coupes and late models competed along with other support divisions. The track was idle from 1978-1982, but returned to racing action in 1983 under a leaseholder. Saturday night classes around this time were Big-block modifieds, Semi-Late Models, six-cylinder modifieds, and street stocks. The Colwells returned as promoters in 1987 and replaced late models with sprint cars, retaining small block modifieds on the weekly program. In 2002, the track became idle again until Andy Paden re-opened it midway through the 2004 season. Again, the track closed after 3 races in 2005 and remained closed until August 26, 2007. This time, the track reopened for weekly Sunday action under Glenn Hinkle and family with sprint cars, 358-modifieds, and other support divisions. They ran a 4-meet season in 2007 and did not crown any champions. In 2008, Hinkle announced weekly racing of 410 sprint cars, 358-modifieds, street stocks, and mini stocks. Sportsman’s Speedway remained in operation until the end of the 2015 season and has been idle since 2016 where it still stands today. Jim Colwell (Sam Colwell’s brother) spoke and told us that “it became too much to run” and that “you would work all week on the track, only to have it rainout on the weekend.” When it would rainout like that, the money he spent all week for the track would be a major loss and he couldn’t gain that back.
