Nepal Lipi or the Nepal Script is one of the oldest script of Nepal which was believed to have developed in 9th century. It is the true script of Nepal. It is the script of Nepalbhasa or newaa, the language spoken by native ethnic people of Kathmandu Valley and around, the Newars . The old manuscripts are written mostly in this Nepal Lipi. It was widely used till 20th century. But Rana Prime Minister Chandra Shamsher and his successor banned not only writing and publishing in Nepalbhasa but also jailed those who tried to write and publish Nepalbhasa books. This causes the extinction of this Nepal Script too. But 40 years ago , young Newaa people established the Nepal Lipi Guthi, an epigraphic center to preserve and promote the Nepal Lipi along with other old scripts of Nepal like Ranjana, Bhujinmwala, Pachumwala, Litumwala, Kunmwala, Pachumwala etc.
