For the past 22 years, his only mission is to revive this vanishing art form. Kaavi Kale is an art form where murals are made using red pigment called Kaavi. The murals are carved into a lime plaster sutrface using a technique called etching. The art form reflects the rich architectural heritage of Karavali or coastal Karnataka. Kaavi Kale is usually found on the buildings that are made using lime plaster. Unfortunately, with the introduction of cement in the region, Kaavi Kale gradually declined. Janardhan Havanje is mainly focussing on the restoration and documentation of Kaavi kale. He has done restoration of Kaavi murals in many temples across the Konkan region. Apart from the restoration, Janardhan is also focusing to increase the popularity of the art form. He has created miniature forms of Kaavi kale like wall hangings, fridge magnets and coasters. He is now working to obtain a G.I (Geographical Indication) tag for the Kaavi Kale. Janardhan says that a G.I tag will give it international recognition.
