Antoni Gaudí — L'architecte de Dieu qui a bâti Barcelone | documentaire!
Antoni Gaudí is one of the most recognizable architects in the history of art. His buildings defy conventions, push the boundaries of what is possible, and continue, nearly a century after his death, to draw millions of visitors to Barcelona each year. But behind the undulating facades and soaring towers lies a life of rare intensity and complexity—that of a man shaped by illness, consumed by faith, and gradually reduced to the essential by solitude. In this biographical documentary of over an hour, Étienne Beaumont invites you to discover Antoni Gaudí in all the depth of his human and artistic journey. Together, we trace the architect's Catalan origins—a sickly child, the son of a coppersmith, confined by rheumatism to immobility and observation, who thus developed a way of seeing the world unlike any other. We follow his formative years in Barcelona, his student provocations, his first scandals and commissions, up to his decisive encounter with the patron Eusebi Güell, the man without whom Gaudí's work might never have reached the dimensions we know today. This documentary portrait explores the foundations of Gaudí's architectural philosophy: his rejection of the straight line, his revolutionary use of parabolic arches and catenary structures, his working method using suspended models rather than plan drawings, and his profound conviction that nature is the only legitimate master of architecture. We analyze his major works—Casa Vicens, Palau Güell, Casa Batlló, Casa Milà, and Park Güell—not as static tourist attractions, but as stages in a continuous intellectual and spiritual evolution. Gaudí's personal life—his successive bereavements, his only attempt at love, his gradual shift towards asceticism and mystical faith—is approached with the care and nuance it deserves. We examine the last decades of his life, when he abandoned all outside commissions to devote himself exclusively to the Sagrada Família, living on the construction site in voluntary poverty, collecting donations himself in the streets of Barcelona to finance its construction. Finally, we recount his death—struck by a tram, mistaken for a pauper, cared for in the poorhouse—and the posthumous fate of a work long forgotten before being recognized as one of the most original contributions to world architecture. This documentary is for anyone interested in art history, architecture, Catalonia, and the question of what it means to dedicate an entire life to a work that transcends oneself. It is designed for a cultured and curious audience, eager to understand the people behind the monuments.
