Born in Mississippi and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, he studied at Wilberforce University and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music under George Whitefield Chadwick and later Edgard Varèse. Still's close collaboration with notable African-American literary and cultural figures places him firmly within the Harlem Renaissance movement.
