El triste destino de la Vieja Maternidad Provincial: entre el abandono y la inseguridad

What was once the most emblematic health center for families in Córdoba has now become a symbol of state neglect. The grounds of the former Provincial Maternity Hospital, located at the entrance to San Vicente, are in a desolate state that has left local residents on edge. After its services were moved to the new building two years ago, the concrete behemoth has been left paralyzed, impacting the quality of life for the entire neighborhood. A recent visit by the program "El Show del Lagarto" confirmed the severity of the situation. Residents and former hospital employees expressed their anguish at seeing how the facilities, which reportedly still retain some of their internal equipment, have become a source of conflict. The lack of official activity has led to the accumulation of garbage, the proliferation of pests such as rats and scorpions, and, most worryingly, the use of the grounds by homeless people and the open consumption of drugs. Security is the primary concern in the Cairo Passage and Agustín Garzón Street area. Despite having an internal police presence to prevent squatting, the surrounding area has become impassable. Residents complain that the sidewalks are being used as open-air garbage dumps and that the movement of people from outside the neighborhood creates a climate of constant fear, especially for the children who attend the adjacent primary and secondary schools. The community's demand is unanimous: the urgent redevelopment of the space. While some propose the creation of a clinic or primary healthcare center to alleviate the demand in the area, others suggest a community or educational center that would bring life and order back to the neighborhood. The presence of a "white elephant" in the middle of a residential area not only detracts from the neighborhood's appearance but also jeopardizes the safety of its residents. For the time being, the residents themselves are trying to maintain order, creating small gardens on the sidewalks to prevent further littering. However, citizen efforts are insufficient to compensate for the lack of a clear reuse policy from the Provincial Government.
