This journey had special significance in the monarchy. It is still celebrated in various ways. The Bali Yatra covering fifteen days starting from Ashwinna Mahalaya Tithi to ends on Purnima. The unique drum beat 'DIG DIGOBALI CHANG CHANG' is heard everywhere duringthis festival. Although other deities are worshipedin it, the yatra is held based on the trinity ofSureswari, Khambeswari and Samalswari of Sonepur. The Barua represents the deity to whom the people offering worship during the festival. He moves from temple to temple and from place to place dancing vigorously with the beating of Dhol, Ghanti & Muhuri. Bali is an essential part of this ritual. Meaning of Bali: Bali(Sacrifice) literally means offering, worship material, 'strong' & 'surrender'. But in Subarnapu it means 'BARUA'. In this journey, fifteen and sixteen Baruas are purified to perform the dance and devote themselves to Shakti worship for sixteen days. It is believed that the title 'Bali', meaning strong or powerful, was given in recognition of the prowess of the goddess. Since innumerable animal sacrifice(Bali) are being offered at the same time, it may be called i sacrifice(Bali) for the purpose of sacrifice(Bali). However, since the major deities of SubarnapurCity are being worshiped in this journey, there is a possibility that they have named it as 'Bali Yatra' without naming a single goddess but Sonepur is described as the goddess appearance in the local language is called 'BALI'. Hence this festival is known as Bali Jatra.
