40$ A Day In Sri Lanka: KL to London | EP1

My first week in Sri Lanka was wonderful! I arrived in Colombo on Monday evening, exhausted after the most overwhelming month—only to be welcomed by the warm embrace of the Sri Lankan people. The smiles! Every glance is met with such genuine warmth and kind curiosity. I love it so much. I’ve also had some of the best meals of my life—traditional Sri Lankan Malay dishes, pillowy idiyappam (string hoppers), rice and curries, sticky-sweet seeni sambol, brown sugar appam. Ahhh, pure perfection. As part of my series exploring colonial traces across Asia and Europe, I spent the week wandering through Colombo’s streets, where layers of Portuguese, Dutch, and British history still live on—in the architecture, food, and even in the small details of everyday life. Like many countries with a colonial past, Sri Lanka’s history is complex. But what stands out most is the resilience of its people—the way they preserve traditions, embrace the present and create joy in the present. I can’t wait to keep exploring this incredible place!
