Banjar–Cijulang Line Reactivation: Are the Old Railroads Ready to Come Back to Life?
The Banjar-Cijulang railway line, which has been inactive for decades, is now being discussed again for reactivation. The Governor of West Java proposed this plan as part of developing connectivity in the southern region of West Java, particularly to support tourism in Pangandaran and the surrounding area. The reactivation of this line will not only reopen efficient transportation access but also preserve historical heritage such as the Wilhelmina Tunnel and the Cikacepit Bridge. Will this long-dormant railway soon be revived? Construction of this line began around 1911 and was inaugurated in 1921. Traversing the hilly and rocky terrain of South Priangan, it connects Banjar Station, Pangandaran, and Cijulang. Its purpose was not only to provide access to the southern coastal areas but also to transport agricultural products and support the burgeoning tourism sector at that time. What makes this line special is the natural beauty it traverses. Hills, tropical forests, and steep ravines create a dramatic backdrop along the entire length of the line. One of his masterpieces is the Wilhelmina Tunnel, which cuts through a hill for over a kilometer, making it one of the longest tunnels in Indonesia. However, this glory was short-lived. As economic activity declined and road access improved, the Banjar-Cijulang line began to lose its prestige. In the 1980s, the line was officially decommissioned. The tracks were left swallowed up by undergrowth, the stations abandoned, and the old bridges awaited their demise. Today, the Banjar-Cijulang line is a legend—reminiscent of a time when railways were the lifeblood of southern Java. There was hope for the line's revitalization, particularly to support the tourism sector in Pangandaran. But to this day, the line is still waiting to be revived from its long, historical slumber.
