The Day Iceland Stood Still Panel Discussion. A BBFF Special Screening June 26, 2026.

In 1975, nearly 90 percent of the women of Iceland chose not to work for one day. They simply stepped away from their jobs, their homes, and their daily responsibilities to demonstrate something profound—that their contributions were essential, and that equality, respect, and opportunity mattered. The result wasn't simply a day of protest.  It became a turning point in history and helped inspire generations of women around the world. What makes this story so remarkable is not only what happened, but how it happened. Through empathy, solidarity, humor, determination, and a shared vision for a better future, ordinary women accomplished something extraordinary. The film reminds us that meaningful change often begins in communities just like ours. It begins when people come together, listen to one another, and decide that their voices matter. The conversation about gender equality is not confined to one country or one generation. It continues today, and while perspectives may differ on how best to move forward, the questions this film raises remain deeply relevant: How do we create societies where everyone is respected, valued, and able to thrive? What can each of us do within our own communities? Following the screening, we were honored to welcome an outstanding panel moderated by Suzanne Dufore. Joining her will be Stacy Cross, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, and filmmaker Leela Lynn, who will share her perspective on growing up in Iceland, creating Heart to Heart, and discussing women's rights, gender equality, and the importance of continuing these conversations today. This is their conversation along with questions from the audience.
