The story goes that the Phantom and Christine were in love with each other but once Christine fell in love with Raoul, her love for the Phantom dissolved because of his hideous appearance. Desperate to get her back, the Phantom fights Raoul and kidnaps Christine before he realizes that she will ever love him and that she is willing to live with the Phantom forever just to save Raoul. In the end, the Phantom lets Raoul and Christine escape. At long last, after Christine has died, Raoul goes to visit her grave only to see the Phantom has been there as well and that his love for Christine has never died.
