Should Australia join the European Union? Australia joining the EU is the topic of this video. In March 2026 Ursula von der Leyen flew to Canberra to sign a Free Trade Agreement, a new Security and Defence Partnership, and open negotiations for Australia to join Horizon Europe, so the question is suddenly less crazy than it sounds. This video breaks down whether Australia joining the EU is actually possible, what Europe wants from Australian critical minerals like lithium, cobalt and rare earths, and why AUKUS and the cancelled French submarine deal make Australia a completely different case from Canada or Ukraine. We look at Article 49 of the Treaty on European Union, the fact that the EU never legally defined what a European state even is, the time difference problem, Australia competing in Eurovision, and Queen Mary of Denmark being the first Australian born monarch in European history. Then we get realistic about Macron's idea of a multi tiered Europe and a democratic strategic community that could integrate Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea without full membership.
