Anyone who has attempted to learn the basics of circular breathing will have noticed that the worst problem is feeling short of breath. After some consistent practice, practicing more or less every day, this problem tends to disappear. However, the resulting problem is excess air during circular breathing. This happens because we haven't yet eliminated our fear of not inhaling enough. Therefore, with each breathing cycle, we tend to inhale vigorously, accumulating excess air. This error has several consequences: the diaphragm remains in a relatively low position and under tension, with the risk of producing inconsistent or poorly measured sounds. Furthermore, an inhalation that is too long will consequently lengthen the duration of some sounds, forcing us to slow down the rhythm or play at a slower tempo. Remember that the diaphragm is a muscle that works primarily during inhalation. So with each vigorous inhalation, you command the diaphragm by asking for a quick, broad downward movement. When exhaling, you use the abdominal muscles to expel air. Using passive breathing, by contracting the abdominal muscles, you raise the diaphragm, pushing air out. By releasing the abdominal muscles, the diaphragm descends, drawing in only the necessary amount of air. The sound of inhaled air disappears, the tempo of inhalation decreases, the exchange of fresh air, and the breathed air is decidedly more similar to normal breathing, albeit "fragmented" by the rhythmic structure of the piece. A good breathing technique certainly benefits the piece, making it more linear, less discontinuous, easier to keep time, and above all, using less energy.
