The name "Huai Yot" comes from the geographical features of the district, where "Huai" refers to various streams that are branches of the Trang River. It is the main river of the province, flowing through various parts of the district. The word "Yod" refers to the mountain peaks that line the eastern side of the district, known as the Banthat Mountains.
