Como é feita a Amarula?

Amarula liqueur is known worldwide for its creaminess and exotic flavor, with an alcohol content of 17%. Originating from the African marula tree (Sclerocarya birrea), the marula fruit, when ripe, has yellow skin and light-colored pulp, and is rich in vitamin C. The harvest takes place from January to March and usually brings together thousands of people. The drink is prepared from the distillation of the fermented pulp of the fruit and began to be marketed in 1989 by the South African company Southern Liqueur Company of South Africa. It can be consumed neat, on the rocks, or as an accompaniment to other foods, such as coffee or ice cream. In 2014, the liqueur won its third gold medal, awarded by the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) in London, making the slogan "The spirit of Africa" internationally a reality. From the marula tree, nothing is wasted: the oil from the seeds is used as candles, the fruit peel is used to make teas or fertilizers, the bark of the trunk produces a reddish-brown dye, ropes are made from the inside of the trunk, the wood and branches are used in the production of objects, and the roots, because they store a lot of water, are harvested during the dry season. The elephant on the product label is explained by these animals' predilection for the marula fruit. In addition, since 2002, the beverage brand has been involved in a project called "The Amarula Elephant Research Programme," responsible for monitoring these animals in the jungle in order to preserve them. There are several legends about the marula tree. One of them says that the marula tree is the "marriage tree" and grants vigor and fertility to those who marry under its branches; another claims that when a woman eats the marula fruit, her chances of getting pregnant increase and, through a preparation made from the tree (female or male), it is possible to choose the sex of the baby. There is a third legend that goes even further and is based on the belief that if the baby is born with a different sex than what was "programmed," it has special powers.
