Bought a blooming begonia at the store? What should you do next? How do you repot it properly? How do you care for it, and how do you identify the type of begonia you're looking for? Most often, you'll find flowering Elatior begonias at the store, less often tuberous begonias (including trailing ones), and in the spring, stores often stock ever-blooming begonias. While tuberous and ever-blooming begonias can also be successfully grown in the garden, the Elatior begonia is an indoor begonia. It's also believed that the Elatior begonia is very finicky. What does an Elatior begonia need to ensure it grows and blooms as luxuriantly indoors as it does in the store? First, after bringing such a begonia home from the store, carefully inspect its root system by removing the pot. If the root system is in good condition, you can safely place it in a north- or east-facing window and admire its blooms. Once flowering has finished, you can repot. To repot any begonia (including Elatior begonia), you'll need nutritious soil—preferably specially formulated for begonias (or for roses and begonias)—and a rooting agent, such as perlite. The perlite content should make up 1/3 to 1/4 of the total soil volume. Instead of expanded clay, it's best to add foam chips to the bottom of the pot, as begonias dislike excess moisture at their feet, which expanded clay will release. When repotting a begonia in a new pot, try to preserve its root ball and root system as much as possible, as begonia roots are very fragile and can rot at breaks or kinks, leading to blacklegs and certain death. The begonia's root collar should be left at the same height as it was in the previous pot. Water the begonia very gently and only around the edge of the pot; do not leave excess water in the saucer. After watering, the begonia's soil in the pot should be moist, but not wet. To prevent rot, you can add a small amount of phytosporin or hydrogen peroxide solution (5 drops per 1 liter of water) to the water each time you water.
