What Is the Metal Element in Five-Element Theory? | TCM Explained
This short lecture explains the meaning of the Metal element in the Five-Element theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In classical Chinese thought, Metal represents the movement of contraction, consolidation, and clearing. The expression “ming jin shou bing” (鸣金收兵, sounding the metal to withdraw troops) illustrates this idea: Metal signifies gathering, restraining, and bringing processes to closure. Although metal can change shape, its nature tends toward hardness and coolness. In TCM theory, this characteristic is reflected in the concept of clearing and descending (qing su), which governs the physiological functions associated with the Metal phase. Understanding the Metal element helps clarify the relationships between seasonal change, organ function, and the dynamic transformations described in the Five-Element system. #tcm #fiveelements #chinesemedicine #tcmtheory ____________________________________________________ Disclaimer This video is intended for educational purposes only and is designed for students and practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
