War has finally come to the homes of wealthy Russians: they are leading all of Russia into rebellion

For four years, the Kremlin has tried to shield Russians from the consequences of the war in Ukraine, maintaining a semblance of normal life for wealthy city dwellers. However, now Ukrainian drones are attacking the logistics centers of the country's largest e-commerce company, Wildberries, bringing the war into the homes of Russia's middle class . According to The Wall Street Journal , Wildberries is deeply integrated into everyday life in Russia, with 81 million monthly users, according to its website. Hundreds of thousands of third-party sellers use its platform, selling everything from clothing and home goods to gaming consoles. On Saturday, Ukrainian drones struck two Wildberries facilities, including a massive complex near Moscow. On the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, two more Wildberries facilities in southern Russia were attacked. As a result, total losses could range from $3 to $4.4 billion. Most of these losses were attributed to the destruction of merchandise belonging to vendors, not to the Wildberries buildings themselves. Some sellers expressed shock on social media that their goods were burned. Victoria Terekhova, who sells children's clothing, said about half of her inventory was destroyed in the warehouse strikes, costing more than $160,000. "If these strikes continue, we'll have nothing left," she said. Many suppliers expressed anger at Wildberries, fearing the company would not compensate them for their losses. Less than two weeks before the attacks, the company amended its agreement with suppliers, absolving itself of liability in the event of drone strikes. The strikes sparked debate over whether Wildberries' warehouses constitute a legitimate military target. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy justified the attacks, claiming that the logistics centers targeted by Kyiv help supply the Russian army with drone components, navigation equipment, and other gear. While Wildberries' website displays drones and body armor, the vast majority of its products are civilian. Even before the attacks on e-commerce warehouses, Russians were expressing discontent over widespread fuel shortages resulting from a months-long campaign of Ukrainian drone attacks on oil refineries. "The fuel crisis is perhaps the most visible shock to ordinary citizens since the mobilization of new troops in September 2022," Oxford Economics said in a research note this week. At the same time, Putin shows no inclination to scale back his military ambitions in Ukraine in response to the worsening economic situation. Maxim Mironov, a finance professor at IE Business School in Madrid, stated that the Ukrainian drone strikes will ultimately have only a minor negative impact on the Russian economy, but their psychological impact is already significant. "For years, Putin has been spreading the story that the fighting is happening somewhere on the outskirts of the empire, that it's the special forces, and everything is fine. Now people are starting to feel it, because of the lines at gas stations, because of the fires... Everyone in Russia sees the war from their window," he said.
