Perth is one of the most isolated major cities on Earth — closer in distance to Singapore than to Sydney. The Jack Hills contain zircon crystals dated to 4.4 billion years old, making them the oldest known terrestrial materials ever discovered anywhere on the planet. Shark Bay's living stromatolites are direct biological descendants of the organisms that first oxygenated Earth's atmosphere. In 1933, Western Australians voted 2-to-1 to secede from Australia — the only secessionist referendum in Australian history to return a majority for leaving. And the Southwest Australia Floristic Region is one of just 36 formal biodiversity hotspots on Earth, with nearly half of its 8,500 plant species found absolutely nowhere else in existence.
